Ultium Cells is a joint venture between General Motors and LG Chem, to manufacture battery cells for electric vehicles in a new, 2.8 million square foot facility in Lordstown, OH. Egan installed more than 4,500 linear feet of piping for recovery and purification systems, along with fabrication and installation of another nearly 4,700 feet of piping in the cooling tower and tank yard areas.

Egan used 3D laser scanning to verify equipment locations in the owner-provided model prior to installation. The model was off significantly, and even the ground elevations were inaccurate. Using the scan data, Egan was able to adjust its fabrication plan to account for these discrepancies. As a result, Egan’s fabricated piping had no errors and no field repairs.

In addition to the pipe spools, Egan also fabricated two cooling towers at its Michigan headquarters that were shipped to the Ohio site for installation. The towers and associated piping were installed in just a week’s time. The Egan superintendent estimates that without the scan data, the same installation would have required a month of field construction.
