Heat Exchanger Building & Tie-Ins

When an industrial manufacturer needed to quickly scale production, the company selected Andy J. Egan Co., Inc. to construct and install a new heat exchanger building with tie-ins to the existing plant, as well as chemical lines, steam and condensate piping.

Within a single business day of receiving the project scope, Egan pipefitters arrived at the worksite, which was little more than a concrete slab. The crew had just four weeks before commissioning would begin, and the extreme pace of the project became one of Egan’s fastest-ever turnkey installations.

For a project of this scale, installation typically requires at least a three-month window. However, Egan implemented a variety of techniques to significantly condense the schedule.

As the region’s largest source for skilled labor, Egan was able to quickly assemble a team of individuals with a history of work on similar projects. The team’s experience allowed the 12-person crew to work swiftly and efficiently.

Egan took advantage of its fabrication shop to pre-construct portions of the project. The lay-down was area limited on the project site, and fabricating allowed Egan to increase its capacity to concurrently produce spools that would be installed on site.

Similarly, Egan skillfully coordinated the precise piping routes for equipment that had yet to arrived on site. Doing so ensured that lead times didn’t slow the pace of construction and that equipment was quickly set upon delivery.

Egan’s internal design team also worked closely with the customer to modify some of the original piping plans in order to reduce the amount of welding done inside the existing building. This, in turn, reduced shutdown times, expediting the overall schedule. The customer’s leadership, quick decision-making and overall receptiveness to design changes contributed significantly to the team’s ability to achieve the project goals.
