
Greenhouse Expansion & Renovation

This three-phase project upgrades the Plant Sciences Greenhouse through a combination of renovations and additions that include state-of-the-art environmental controls and the ability to conduct controlled, replicated experiments regardless of the season and under a variety of growth, environmental and stress conditions. The first phase required a significant amount of BIM coordination within a small footprint. In this phase, construction of the head house was completed and individual greenhouses were further divided into rooms with separate temperature and humidity controls. Egan's scope included the installation of steam and humidification systems; a domestic water system; and a unique RO skid with both treated and fertilized water;
Egan’s crew overcame a unique challenge when installing runs of pipe upon finding that the structural steel of the greenhouse was not load-bearing. To compensate, the crew reinforced the piping with unistrut and additional anchors. Equipment and material deliveries also required careful coordination due to onsite space requirements, so most materials were stored at Egan’s headquarters for just-in-time deliveries.
